CEE Assistant Professor Lei Zhang received the Best Overall Paper Award at the 2011 World Symposium on Transportation and Land Use Research. The paper, titled "How Built Environment Affects Travel Behavior: A Comparative Analysis of the Connections between Land Use and Vehicle Miles Traveled in U.S. Cities", is one of the first works on the topic in the literature and provides immediately useful results for land use and transportation planning decision-makers. Dr. Zhang is the lead author of the paper. Co-authors include Ms. Arefeh Nasri, one of Dr. Zhang's Ph.D. students, and two University of Washington researchers.
