A. James Clark School of Engineering second-semester sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate students of any discipline are invited to apply for a two-week course on Sustainable Green Infrastructure for the Urban Environment, to be held this spring in partnership with Politecnico di Torino in Turin, Italy.

Running May 23 – June 7, 2015, this three-credit course will expose students to the theoretical framework, concepts, and techniques required to develop green infrastructure solutions for alternative urban environments, complex spatial systems encompassing mobility, environment, energy, and social well-being. Applications will be accepted until March 1, 2015.

As program director, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Associate Professor Dimitrios Goulias will lead Clark School students through the program, teaching in the areas of construction and highway materials, quality assurance and specifications, infrastructure and pavement condition assessment, and management systems.

Key faculty experts from the U.S. and Italy will also address the principles of technical, cultural and social approaches used in the design of sustainable green urban infrastructure.

Clark School students will be grouped in multidisciplinary teams with students from the Politecnico di Torino to examine and develop green alternative solutions for various real case urban scenarios. Students will also take part in site visits of the most important cultural and civil engineering marvels in Torino and Milano.

More information about the ENCE489N: Sustainable Green Infrastructure for the Urban Environment program – including the course schedule, location information and learning objectives – is available online via the program booklet and the application website.

Students are encouraged to apply for the program in advance of the deadline as maximum enrollment is 25 students.

Questions regarding the course, itinerary, or in-country information, should be directed to Associate Professor Dimitrios Goulias. General questions or requests for assistance with the application should be directed to the University of Maryland Education Abroad Short-Term Programs office.
