Clark Distinguished Chair Deb Niemeier, a leading advocate for the involvement of engineers in addressing societal, environmental, and human rights challenges, has been featured in a special video segment marking the 50th anniversary of the Committee on Human Rights, formed in 1976 by the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine.
In the segment, Niemeier highlights the need for engineers to widen their scope and consider big-picture contexts, including climate change and the impact of AI. She highlights the CHR’s importance in promoting awareness and sustaining a cross-disciplinary approach to these issues.
A member of the National Academy of Engineering, Niemeier has earned international acclaim for her groundbreaking work, which explores the intersection between engineering practice and socioeconomic impacts. Recent accolades include the Franklin Institute’s Bower Award, which she received in 2023.
Since its formation half a century ago, the CHR has worked to protect scientists, engineers, and health professionals who face persecution or detention, and to promote human rights generally, including through advocacy, research, and expert assistance.
